Description
Microcone is an innovative multi-directional microphone designed for small group conversations. Using just a single device, Microcone can record individuals within six different directions (forming a 360 degree recording area) on six separate audio channels, so you won't need to purchase multiple microphones or spend time setting them up for your groups. With the associated Microcone Recorder software, a database of conversation recordings can be quickly and easily searched and navigated, in order to analyse discussions and playback key moments.
Key Features
and/or Benefits
Innovation - Microphone Array Technology - multiple microphones functioning as a single directional input device
Microcone uses patent-pending microphone array technology to capture audio from up to six different recording directions - all within a single device. Microphone arrays consist of multiple microphones functioning as a single directional input device: essentially, an acoustic antenna. Using sound propagation principles, the principal sound sources in an environment can be spatially located and distinguished from each other. This innovation results in several distinguishing benefits: an enriched surround sound experience for listeners, the ability to indicate and locate active speakers, and the separation of voices into separate tracks for more accurate transcription.
When designing the enclosure, the significance of the innovative microphone array technology could not be ignored. The aesthetic and form of the product were developed to convey the six directional audio regions. The elegantly curved-hexagonal form creates a beautiful platform to house the microphones in a precise array while subliminally communicating the segmented recording directions. The cone shape further lent itself to the positioning of a central microphone in the top, used to filter ambient sounds, and its height protects the device from obstruction by desktop clutter during meetings. The iconic form also makes the Microcone brand distinctive and memorable.
When developing the design of the device it was very important that the materials selected were highly functional while also creating a product that would be perceived to be high quality, precise and representative of its value. The acoustic fabric was chosen to disguise the microphones and create a beautiful finish over the ABS chassis. The Anodised aluminium die-cast base and ring provide a high value metal finish as well as adding weight to product to ensure it sits well on the table without unnecessary vibration. The Santoprene feet are designed to further minimise vibration and microphone intereference.
Microcone Recorder has been designed to provide a clear and concise view of conversation recordings, enabling efficient review and analysis of their information content. During recording, individuals within a group are automatically distinguished on separate audio tracks based on their location. Recordings can then be navigated using an intuitive timeline linked to the audio and transcript, and the database can be searched by date, names and keywords. Transcription is facilitated via either a simple manual interface or single-click integration with an automated web service. An audio-spatial map presents a concise visual summary of the positions and relative contributions of participants.
The product packaging is designed to securely and efficiently pack the product for transportation and delivery to the user. The high quality finishes and materials used on the packaging build on the purchasing experience while encouraging the consumer to keep and reuse/repurpose the packaging. All materials selected for the packaging are recyclable.
