Description
The Original ’74 is a re-invention of the classic sandwich maker first introduced by Breville in 1974. By referencing the design cues of the classic sandwich maker, the Original ’74 meets the expectations of the discerning, modern day consumer and accommodates emerging food trends. The latest in technology, material and manufacturing were utilised to design a classic and distinctive sandwich maker with twenty first century features. The clever use of polished stainless steel and phenolic evokes 40 years of Breville heritage and brings a timeless durability to a modern day design.
Key Features
and/or Benefits
Baking trends have evolved since 1974 and consumers are more discerning about the types of bread they eat. To accommodate this trend the Original ‘74 features jumbo-sized die cast cooking plates to allow for supersized and gourmet breads as well as puff pastry, brioche, croissants and flat breads. Deeper pockets and wide sealing edges accept more filling while reducing overflow.
Competitor’s sandwich makers are generally plastic in material with flimsy mechanical latches and poor construction assemblies. Constructed from durable stainless steel, the long horizontal handles on the Original ’74 together with robust construction fixings allows the user to apply more closing force to seal & cut generously filled toasties with ease. Avoiding mechanical latches which are prone to failure with use over time a pared back stainless steel wire locking latch was incorporated into the design. The locking latch also enables the unit to be conveniently stored in an upright position.
Extensive FEA engineering heat analysis testing was instrumental in the development of the innovative ‘cool touch’ handles. Using 3D CAD the testing highlighted areas on the handle which were above touch temperature. The temperature was lowered by removing material from the underside of the handle to reduce metal on metal contact with the housing together with thinning of material on the forked arms. Both handles achieved well below the standard touch temperatures without jeopardising form.
Removal of grease traps was a fundamental feature in the design as these over time build up with melted cheese and are difficult to clean. The soft form not only reflects the heritage nature of the classic 74 however it also aids in the cleaning of the product including the housings, handles and feet. Where possible radius edges replaced sharp corners to make cleaning easier particularly in and around the hinge area. In addition non-stick PFOA free coating was used to aid in the cleaning process.
Like the classic sandwich maker, the Original ’74 is designed to last. Constructed from heavy duty die cast aluminium cooking plates, stainless steel top and bottom housings, stainless steel handles and phenolic feet, such material choice will ensure the product withstands the rigors of everyday use and handling in the kitchen.
