The end result is an elegant, resilient ceiling fan that combines exacting engineering, quality materials and a level of craftsmanship typically reserved for luxury furniture.
Haiku's revolutionary technology hides inside the seamless fit and finish at its center, concealing patented electronics and a cool-running motor with an integrated inverter drive that delivers an 80% improvement in energy efficiency over conventional ceiling fans. Haiku sets a new standard for quiet ceiling fans (less than 34 dBA), with windings tightly fixed within this totally-enclosed core. Haiku not only starts off silent, but also stays silent.
The use of direct current and permanent magnets yields a motor 80% more efficient than traditional AC offerings, optimized for maximum airflow in even the toughest tropical conditions.
Haiku's three-dimensional, patent-pending Thin Sheet® aerofoils move large amounts of air with minimum resistance for maximum efficiency. This curvature offers a vast improvement in performance over flat ceiling fan blades. The aerofoils' sleek central finish, seamlessly connecting directly to the center of the fan, reflects the precision engineering at the fan's core. Like the three lines of a Haiku poem, the aerofoils appear simple at first glance, but their precise engineering reflects the careful evolution of their design.
Naturally beautiful, fully renewable and incredibly strong (it has the tensile strength of steel), bamboo was the perfect material for crafting a fan that creates a new paradigm in ceiling fan design and engineering. The hardy grass regrows to full maturity within 5 years after each cutting, providing material for the duration of its life.
Matrix composite aerofoils also undergo a rigorous process to ensure their consistency and quality. After three coats of automotive-grade paint, the final product is a resilient aerofoil, coated in a finish that will never dull or discolor over time.
Experienced furniture craftsmen oversee every step of bamboo aerofoil creation, from applying the adhesive and forming the shapes to sanding the finished product, checking accuracy and quality at numerous points. This attention to detail ensures perfect consistency in aerofoils, leading to improved balance for maximum air movement and efficiency. A technician sorts all aerofoils into groups by specific weight to ensure the best starting balance before testing. The final step in creating a Haiku ceiling fan is perfecting the balance through a 13-step process. Every Haiku is individually balanced at all speeds before it's disassembled and packaged for shipping.
A typical domestic ceiling fan consumes 90W or more of electrical input power, but only generates about 15W of mechanical shaft power - an efficiency of just 16%. We saw the potential to reinvent the motor with unique electronic controls placed inside the core, allowing us to radically change its appearance. This design would offer an unprecedented level of efficiency, as well as a sleek profile and silent operation. This goal was surpassed - the Haiku fan consumes only 2 to 30W of power depending on speed and is rated best in efficiency by ENERGY STAR®, exceeding requirements by 400-600%.
